Delhi cops, advocate
Four Arrested For Demanding Rs 26 Lakh Bribe
From Murder Accused
New Delhi: Three crime branch
officials and a senior advocate of the Delhi HC were
arrested on Friday for allegedly demanding a bribe of
Rs 26 lakh for favouring an accused in a murder case.
Former Congress councillor Ashok Jain is one of the
main accused in the case, along with nine others. All
four were arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau
under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act on
the basis of proof collected through a sting, carried
out by the son of one of the accused over 10 months.
While the sting points
to the involvement of crime branch ace investigator
inspector K G Tyagi, sub inspector Mukesh and ASI
Rajbir in a conspiracy of demanding and accepting
bribe, the audio/video recordings also show senior
advocate Ravinder Chadha acting as mediator for the
illegal transaction on behalf of Tyagi. According to
the complainant, Rs 26 lakh had to be paid over
various installments, out of which Rs 4 lakh was
meant to be the fees of the advocate and the rest
went to Tyagi, officials added.
Speaking to TOI, ACP N
Dilip Kumar, anti-corruption bureau, said: Our
focus is now on the corruption angle. After all,
police officers have no business to take any money
from anyone. All four are accused of corruption,
extortion and conspiracy and we are investigating the
abuse of authority and penury gain by a public
servant and others in the case. We are not ruling out
the possibility that the accused officers might have
taken bribe from both the victim and accused.
The sting was
carried out by Abhinav Krishan Aggarwal, son
of Gopal Krishan Aggarwal, one of the accused
in the murder case of a builder, Vijay Singh
Yadav at Hauz Qazi. Yadav was murdered on
September 29, 2007, by contract killers
apparently at the behest of Ashok Jain, who
was arrested this February. Nine more people
were subsequently arrested by Tyagi and his
team.
Abhinav said: My
father has been framed from day one. Promising to
bail my father out, Tyagi, who was the investigating
officer in the case, took a bribe of Rs 8 lakh
initially. But after realizing that the case was
heading nowhere I got in touch with the ACB and
embarked on the sting. It was Tyagi who recommended
the lawyer to us to fight our case. TNN
Mumbai: A constable at the local
arms unit of the Mumbai police has been arrested for
allegedly cheating a city-based jeweller by promising
him to get gold seized by the customs department at
lower rates. The constable, Milind Salvi, even
knocked off Rs 22 lakh from him, promising to get 5
kg gold.
The jeweller, Mukesh
Choradia, has been missing since the past three
months.
Last year, Salvi
approached Mukesh through a common friend and offered
to arrange for gold seized by JNPT customs officials.
The jeweller paid him Rs 22 lakh for the gold in
presence of their friend, Uttam Bagre, the police
said. However, Salvi failed to get the promised gold
and when Mukeshs father, Parasmal, came to know
about it, he, along with his son, approached the
constable on July 4. Salvi then had told the two that
he would pay the money back only if they could bring
Bagre to him, in front of whom, the deal was struck,
the police said.
Salvi, in the
meanwhile, sent Bagre to Satara and had been paying
him Rs 10,000 every month. When the Choradias could
not find Bagre anywhere, Parasmal lodged a police
complaint. The next day, on July 5, Mukesh also
disappeared. Parasmal filed a missing persons
complaint and even submitted a letter from Mukesh,
saying he would commit suicide if Salvi failed to
return the money.
Salvi was arrested on
October 8, but he complained about chest pain and got
admitted to a private hospital. Salvi was reinstated
only a month ago after he was suspended for being
involved in a cheating case in 2003. Senior inspector
Yaswant Watkar said, We will question Salvi
about Mukeshs whereabouts.
Now
the police higher ups will find a way to
get the crooked cops off the hook, in
Delhi and also in Mumbai and the Courts
will simply smile and wink their approval
