… despite electrically lit advertising board on all sides; PIL alleges cops at this Marine Drive chowky have been stealing electricity

GOTCHA! The ad on the traffic police chowky at Marine Drive and (below) the electric meter that shows only 7 units have been consumed.

An advertisement on a traffic police chowky at Marine Drive has consumed a mere seven units of electricity since its installation in 2001. This despite the fact that the chowky has electrically lit advertising boards that cover a major portion of the structure. When petitioner I K Chhugani brought this to the notice of the Bombay High Court, the BEST in their reply affidavit to the court last week admitted to the fact and claimed they had replaced the meter.

Chhugani had stated in his February affidavit that he had monitored the Marine Drive chowky meter (number E-054083) for over three weeks and it had not risen from seven units despite several tube lights being used all day and night for the illumination of the advertising board. This would ordinarily result in a meter reading of 300-400 units in a month. "I suspect the meter has been cleverly bypassed by the cops and the power is being pilfered," he said. Chhugani, who is arguing his PIL against illegal police chowkies in the state, has also demanded action against the police for pilfering power from streetlight poles and traffic signals.

Ashok Vasudev Kane, assistant general manager of supply, BEST, has filed an affidavit in court stating, "The meter was installed in the name of Outdoor Campaign Company. After investigating the complaint of the petitioner, we have replaced the meter and sent it for testing." The BEST has also stated that then joint commissioner for administration Hemant Karkare had forwarded a list of 88 police chowkies for showing irregularities in their electric supply to the BEST.
