A Public
Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Bombay High
Court (HC) has sought a CID inquiry into the
advertisements displaced on traffic police pedestals
across the city.
The PIL filed by Khar resident and social activist
Indur Chhugani alleges that the citys traffic
police, in connivance with the civic authorities,
have illegally allowed a private company to install
advertisement booths at all busy traffic
intersections.
Chhugani claims that the advertisements on these
pedestals are sourced illegally and several senior
cops are involved in this advertisement racket which
is worth Rs 10 crore every month.
Since the scam allegedly began in May 2001, the PIL
estimates the fraud to the tune of Rs 1200 crores.
The PIL alleges
that the advertisements on the pedestals are
sourced
illegally
by several cops who are involved in this
racket
The PIL further states that the
monthly revenue generated from these advertisements
(Rs 10 crore) goes into the pockets of the
advertisement company and corrupt policemen, instead
of the state government coffers.
Chhugani alleges that the electricity required to
light up these ad-booths is pilfered from traffic
signals.
The PIL also says that policemen never stand inside
these ad-booths due to unbearable heat generated
inside owing to the advertisement lights.
Such ad booths
are dotted all across Mumbai and Suburbs
Chhugani alleges that the contract
was awarded to the same private company every year
without inviting tenders from other companies -
making it an illegal transaction.
The PIL demands strict action against those involved
in this fraud and has requested the court to direct
the advertisement company to deposit all its earnings
with it. The PIL will come up for hearing in due
course.
