Persecuted by
constable, 23-year-old slashes wrist
Manish
Bane alleges that cop from Rabodi, Thane, has been
harassing him for 2 years, ever since they had a
minor altercation
PRASHANT NARVEKAR
Manish Bane, 23, a
resident of Thane, attempted suicide after he was
allegedly harassed by a constable at Rabodi police
station in Thane. Bane alleged that the constable has
been harassing him for the past two years.
On Friday,
a police van picked him up on
instructions by the said constable and
detained him. Fed up of the harassment
Bane slashed his wrists with a blade.
Bane, who lives with his family, says
that he had an altercation with the
constable two years ago after which he
has been constantly harassed. Rutuja
Sawant, Banes elder sister said,
My brother is a law-abiding
citizen.

Bane recovering in hospital
The constable has been
after him since the time they had a minor tiff.
Earlier, we had lodged a non cognisable complaint on
this issue after he harassed my brother in the middle
of the road a couple of times. Bane,
celebrating his 23 birthday on Friday, had returned
home early. He went out after some time to meet
his friends who had come to wish him, said
Anjali Bane, his mother.
It was then
that Manish was picked up by the police, said
Anjali. We rushed to the police station
where we were told that Manish and the
constable, who resides in the nearby
building, had a fight half-an-hour ago. I
told them Manish was at home at that time and
it was not possible that he had a fight,
said Anjali.
Rutuja said that the
police picked up her brother without citing any
reason and without having a warrant to detain him.
They even told their senior that Manish
misbehaved with them and hit them. The senior was
cooperative and asked his own men that if Manish had
hit them, why did they not take action then and
there. We lodged a complaint and got Manish home,
said Rutuja.
The family says that
Manish was deeply traumatised by the incident and did
not speak to anyone after he came home.
He asked us why
we had not done anything when he had repeatedly told
them of the harassment. He then went out and returned
shortly, going straight to his room. We later found
out that he had bought a pack of blades and used one
of them to slash his wrists. My mother spotted him
lying on his bed with his hands bleeding. She raised
an alarm and we rushed him to the hospital,
said Rutuja.
Suresh Angadi, senior
police inspector of the Rabodi police station assured
the family that he would look into the matter.
We are
investigating the matter. We will definitely take
necessary action as the family has levelled
allegations against one of our staff members,
said Angadi.
Angadi said that the
constable was not allowed to speak to the press on
this issue.

Bandra
families beaten by cops
While they claim traffic police beat even
their wives before their shocked children, officials
say the men had acted funny
MUMBAI MIRROR BUREAU
In the early hours of Saturday, two families from
Bandra and traffic policemen had an allegedly
unpleasant run-in near Khar subway. A fight broke out
between them, which resulted in the families,
including two women, getting beaten up by the cops.
Restaurateur
Farooq Khatri, his wife Nazneen and two
children four-yearold son Anas and a
two-yearold daughter Anahita had been
travelling in a Mahindra Logan with their
family friends Amit Singh, his wife and their
two-year-old daughter. They had been
returning from Khatris restaurant,
Babloos Kitchen, in Goregaon after a
late night dinner. When they neared Khar
subway, they were stopped by the policemen
who were checking motorists for drunken
driving.

during the alleged scuffle

They asked us to
get out of the vehicle and demanded to see our
driving license. The constables were aggressive and
rude. My wife Nazneen got out of the car and told
them to speak properly to us. But instead, the
policemen started abusing us, said Khatri.
Then, when a
constable came too close to Nazneen and pushed her,
she lost her cool and slapped him. After that, the
policemen let themselves loose on us. They pushed us
to the ground and beat us mercilessly. Only one woman
traffic cop tried to intervene and stop the
onslaught, alleged Khatri.
Khatris two
children and Singhs daughter meanwhile stood in
a corner, too shocked to react. My daughter
received minor injuries. But seeing a huge crowd, the
policemen left the scene and went to Khar police
station. While we were trying to come to grips with
the incident, officers from the police station
arrived and took us all to the police station,
added Khatri.
The drama continued
till early morning and an FIR was lodged against
Khatri, Nazneen and Singh. However, the police only
filed a NC (non-cognisable complaint) against the
traffic policemen involved in the incident.
We were not even
drunk and had never imagined something as unpleasant
could happen. We were produced in court on Saturday
afternoon and thankfully our lawyer managed to get us
bail, said Khatri.
Sanjay Barve, joint
commissioner of police, traffic said that the
policemen were just doing their duty. The men
had acted funny and so the police lodged a complaint
against them. We are looking into the case,
said Barve.
HC raps cops
for shielding Chhota Rajan accomplice
Cops get flak for shoddy probe of Vickey
Malhotra, a Chhota Rajan aide, who is a suspect in
the Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case
MUMBAI MIRROR BUREAU
Police on Saturday received flak from the Bombay High
Court for shielding Vickey Malhotra, a Chhota Rajan
aide who is a suspect in the Pawanraje Nimbalkar
murder case. The HC while reserving its verdict in
the case relating to the murder of Nimbalkar, a
Congress leader from Navi Mumbai who was shot dead in
2005, has now directed the state to produce the
entire case records from the police.
The division bench
made its displeasure known over the manner in which
the investigation was carried out in the case by the
police. While hearing submissions by the prosecution,
the judges observed, It seems your officials
tried their best to protect the interests of this
person (Malhotra). They have not even bothered to
record the statements of officials who escorted him
when he was taken out of Thane jail. The court
was hearing a petition filed by Pawanrajes wife
Anandibai, who last year had moved the HC seeking a
CBI inquiry in the case. Nimbalkar and his driver
were killed on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near
Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai in 2006. Anadibai in her
petition alleged that the murder was a fall-out of
political rivalry between her late husband and the
NCP leader and former minister, Padamsinh Patil. The
petition alleges that the police may be biased in the
probe due to the possible involvement of influential
politicians. Prior to the murder, Nimbalkar had
sought police protection fearing a threat to his life
from Patil.
While
reserving the order, the HC asked the police
to hand over the entire case record. Police
had arrested one Tanaji Patil as a prime
suspect and subjected him to a narco test
during which he is supposed to have spoken
about Padmasinha Patils involvement in
the murder. He also allegedly hinted at the
involvement of Chhota Rajans aides D K
Rao and Vickey Malhotra. The police, however,
say they did not find any incriminating
clues against the former minister and
his associates.
