The Bombay high court on Friday warned the state that it would order demolition of all 269 illegal police chowkies within seven days if the police failed to take its previous order to pull down the structures seriously.

( P.L.E.A.D. had moved the PIL Writ Petition at the Mumbai High Court for demolition of these chowkies, as these were sponsored by anti-social elements, mostly pimps in the flesh trade. After they became known in the area as Chowky sponsorers, these people, struck deals, between the police and those who wanted to misuse the police authority, either to escape from some illegality committed or to get some business rival or some other person framed by the police.

Chowkies on footpath to be razed first

Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Friday admitted before the Bombay high court that 137 of its chowkies were built unauthorisedly on pavements and roadsides These structures will be the first of the 279 illegal chowkies in the city that will be demolished.
